Study on Christians and the Use of Numbers - Please read and submit a reply

Post by Mia Sherwood on Wed Oct 08, 2008 11:54 pm

I would like to encourage as many answers as possible into this discussion and don't feel like there are any wrong answers. I plan to do a teaching for the website on the interpretation of numbers in dreams and would like feedback.

I realize that most people believe that God uses numbers symbolically all the time. For instance, seven is the number of completion - it is God's number versus six being satan's, eight is the number of new beginnings, etc.

I want to ask as many people as are willing to participate to please post why you believe that numbers are messages to be decoded, why you think it's a biblical practice and if possible, your biblical foundation for using numbers to mean something symbolically.

AGAIN - this is not a test. It's research and reference material and it will really be helpful in teaching others about dreams and number interpretation.

Thanks so much!

Love,
Mia

Mia,

There are a couple here for me.

# 5= Grace; atonement; fivefold ministry; service
(Is 1:12-14: Matt 25:2; Eph 4:11; Mark 6:38-40; Luke 9:13-16)
The Lord showed me this for my ministry 10 years ago.

#15= Deliverance;grace;freedom;rest.
(Lev23-6-7; Hos 3:2; Gen 7:20; 2 Kings 20:6)
This is a part of that 5 fold ministry.

Hope this helps! Miss you heaps. God bless and may His peace and love surround you always,

Connie

Having come from an abusive ministry, the new place was starting on 8-15... and boy when I got a revelation of that, I shouted all over the place!!! happy dance I would see the numbers in my dream during the 7th month! praiseGod So I was 7-Completed, 8-New Beginning, & 15- FREEEEEEEEEEE bouncing

I'm sorry that I wasn't clear. What I am asking for is the foundational beliefs for the use of numbers. Let me try to word this better. We use numbers symbolically but why? I'm looking for the biblical foundation and beliefs for the use of numbers in Christianity.

Thanks!

Mia

Re: Study on Christians and the Use of Numbers - Please read and submit a reply

Post by lola21st on Thu Oct 09, 2008 12:30 pm

Mia -

In my experience I believe that numbers are another dream symbol to be decoded simply because of the attention that they're given in my dreams. Often, the numbers stand out much more than they would during waking hours, it's like they're out of proportion. For example, the numbers on a clock will be much larger than they are when you look at a clock. A house number will appear larger than normal. A page number in a book will stand out. Also, it's almost like the dream will pause on the number so I have to take note of it. Given this attention, I assume it's done for a reason.

Since I've been studying my dreams with greater care, what I've found is that I receive direction to the scriptures, primarily the Psalms...As an example, recently I dreamt about the number 3755 - it was a house address. At first I thought it was Psalm 37 and 55. Based on events going on in my life at that time, these Psalms REALLY ministered to me, particularly Psalm 37. I believe it was the Lord speaking to my about my life (my house) and encouraging me to rest in Him during this time. He knows what was going on, He's making a note of it and He's acting (or will act) on it. The only thing that I need to do is keep my focus on Him. A couple of weeks later, the number 375 came up again (have to go through my dream notes because I don't remember the circumstances). The 5th verse of Psalm 37 was a reinforcement of what He spoke to my spirit before.

Recently, I dreamt of reading a book and the pages 202 - 204 stood out. When I read Psalm 20:2-4, I knew that He was telling me that He was taking care of me and my situation, that He was strengthening me. My desires would be fulfilled. Thank you Father for your love and faithfulness!

Anyway, this is a slightly different take on numerical symbols in dreams but for me this is another means that God uses to speak and minister to me.

Blessings,

Lurdys

Thank you very much for taking the time to reply, Lurdys. I really appreciate it. Your examples are wonderful examples of literal number use. The number was literally that number in reality.

If I may ask, what is your biblical basis for believing that God uses numbers symbolically instead of literally?

Yes, I realized I managed to talk around that part of your question.... :giggle:

Admittedly, I have to do some research to provide a biblical basis, the above is anectodal, just based on my personal experience. Will do that and reply back...

The book of Daniel for me is a perfect example of numbers being used symbolically. In Chapter 9:24-26, seventy weeks were symbolic for seventy years, etc.

I have to be very honest with you. I always felt that God used numbers symbolically but I believe that ONLY because others told me that he did. Earlier on in my dream life, I bought books because for some reason I had so many numbers that used to show up in my dreams.

Your question really got me thinking because now that I'm growing in understanding dreams, I am learning that we should be able to support everything with the Word of God because He does EVERYTHING in line with His Word because they are one.

Now I am rethinking the whole "numbers" thing...not because I don't believe he uses numbers symbolically, but because I don't have any support biblically nor do I understand the foundational aspect to it. I'm not saying that there isn't any biblical support, but I'm admitting that I never went to the Word to find out...I went to outside sources to get my information.

I know I didn't answer your question per-se...this is more or less me being a little transparent.... :duhh:

number symbolism has always been a bit iffy to me personally. Numbers are usually off in my dreams, especially when it comes to money. But sometimes i'll dream of a scripture with the book, chapter and verse. But thats different.

Revelation 13:18 says "Here is wisdom Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for the number is that of a man; and his number is six hundred and sixty-six."
Most people say the number six is the number of man, but the bible says that the number 666 is the number of "A MAN"

you see the numbers 3,7 & 12 alot in the bible. There were twelve tribes of Isreal, twleve Apostles...im gonna do some research and get back to you.
laugh
three can stand for the Holy Trinity right? wow! what a subject! I can see where people would be tempted to use the symbolism, but i'm ready to get down to the niddy griddy and see what God's Word really says about numbers :-)
Love,
Daph

God has said to me a in a dream look up this book and chapter. And it was specifically what was going on in my life. There was no doubt and no wondering, hm were those numbers for a bible passage? In that case, it is not at all symbolic either... the numbers stand for something literal and specific.

Biblically, every dream that I can think of off the top of my head the number was literal not symbolic.

11 stars - 11 brothers

1 moon - 1 mother

1 sun - 1 father

7 cows - 7 years

7 corn - 7 years

10 horns - 10 kingoms

etc etc etc....

After pondering my response to your question Mia, I realized that the example I gave was not a very good one. The numbers were actually literal while the nouns they described were symbolic.

Wow! thinking

The seventy was literal. The weeks was symbolic. =)

See, if we think about these things we go, WOW. If we just take in what someone feeds us, not-so-WOW.

Post by lola21st on Fri Oct 10, 2008 1:20 pm

I just had a technical difficultly with my internet connection so am not sure if my second draft actually was sent....

Anyway, another observation is that there does seem to be a pattern of use of numbers to represent something (e.g., three = power (Holy Trinity), 7 = completion, 12 = government, etc.) , but these representations aren't referenced as occurring in dreams...therefore the use of numbers in dreams is probably literal, not symbolic...

I can give more thorough examples later, am on my lunch hour and have to go...

I think you are on to something Miss Mia because I went back and read the story of Joseph (he's my homeboy happy dance ) and even the numbers in their dreams that he interpreted with the chief butler and chief baker were literal...three branches and the three baskets represented THREE DAYS!! Hmmm...I started to think that if I had the dreams they had, I would have immediately saw "THREE" and thought about the trinity and may have MISINTERPRETED my own dream...YIKES

I bet the book of Revelations is full of numbers and they probably are all literal. I guess I'm on a quest like Daph to figure this out. All I can say is WOW idea

Re: Study on Christians and the Use of Numbers - Please read and submit a reply

Post by lola21st on Sun Oct 12, 2008 11:41 pm

In order to take a closer look at numerical symbolism in the Bible I searched for summaries and found the following to be useful:

A brief summary (somewhat incomplete in explanation if not inaccurate in spots):
http://www.christcenteredmall.com/teachings/symbolism/numbers.htm

A more detailed explanation of the use of some of the numbers, i.e., 12, 7, 3, 4
http://www.studylight.org/dic/hbd/view.cgi?number=T4649

While Iím satisfied that there is evidence of numerical symbolism in the Bible, it occurred to me that I should focus on dreams in the Bible that contained numbers to see how numbers in these dreams were interpreted. So I reviewed the following dreams:

- Genesis 37:5-10 (Joseph dreams of the sun, moon, and eleven stars bowing down to him. The stars represent his brothers)

- Genesis 40:8-23 (Joseph interprets the head cupbearerís and the head bakerís dream)

- Genesis 41:1-36 (Joseph interprets Pharoahís dream)

- Daniel 7 (Danielís dream of four animals)

In all cases, the numbers were literal, not symbolic. The items that the numbers were quantifying were symbolic. For example, in Danielís dream of four animals the number 4 was literal, but the animals symbolized the four kingdoms that would appear on Earth.

But so far, Iím left confused. Most of the dreams that contained numerical symbols took place in Genesis. The last book that contained numbers was Danielís dream from the book of Daniel. At least thatís how it appears in the quick study that I did, itís possible that I may have overlooked a number dream that appeared in a later book. But I canít believe that there werenít any more numerical dreams in the Bible after Danielís!

So either 1) Since numbers in these dreams were literal, we can conclude that numerical representation in modern day dreams is also literal, or 2) Since there is additional use of numbers in subsequent books of the Bible (albeit not specifically in dreams), and we in modern times have an understanding of these numerical patterns, we could consider numbers in our dreams symbolic....

Ok, so far I think the answer is "it depends"....:-)

Any other thoughts?

Blessings,

Lurdys
