Need prayer (& counseling!)

Recommended Posts

I am in need of prayer and counseling. My family presently attends a church pastored by a man we sat under in the early days of our marriage (about 25 years ago). We were very young in the Lord and very accepting and naive. We loved the pastor and his wife and the people of the church. We didn't study out what was taught, just accepted it because we trusted the pastor. Fast forward to today, after nearly 20 years of our own ministry. We are again attending this man's church, still respect him and love the people. However, several years ago the Holy Spirit impressed me to stop accepting teaching based on my level of respect for the speaker and to dig into the scriptures myself. I was amazed at many of the things I had been living my life based on, had even taught myself, were not even biblical.  Now we sit every Sunday, through Sunday school class and church, and hear this pastor preach the same doctrines I can no longer agree with. Everything within me screams silently. My husband, who had a similar revelation as I had, several months ago, has set that aside and is devouring everything this minister says OUT OF RESPECT. He tunes into the same ministries this man quotes (more than the Bible) and has begun to follow them once again. PLEASE agree with me for 1) the voice of the Holy Spirit would be louder than these other voices and my husband would HEAR and 2) that the Holy Spirit would speak clearly to my husband about leaving this church and he would HEAR and 3) that I can keep my mouth CLOSED and wait on the Lord. From the past I know I often offer my opinion or what I hear the Holy Spirit saying before my husband is ready to acknowledge it and it causes strife and division in our marriage. Thanks!

In this instance Exo, you will need to continue to pray and cover your husband and his mind. I've been in your shoes before, as it pertains to being in a church that was teaching questionable doctrine. The difference between you and I was that it was just me. I made the decision to leave and I didn't have anyone to consider. It's tough, but it's not impossible. God doesn't want you there any more than you don't want to be there so he will move quickly!!

I'm in agreement with you.

Just an update! Thank you for the prayers and the counseling. The Holy Spirit opened the door and we were able to discuss the situation. I discovered that not only was I having problems but my husband was struggling as well. After we brought it before our family, we found they were also struggling. We are now attending a more balanced, family friendly church. Praise God!!
